Postural Analysis

Our body blueprint lies in our posture. Many of the injuries we sustain and the chronic pain and ailments that we endure can be traced back to the way we hold and use our bodies. Posture is both a static and a dynamic entity and movement disorders are influenced by our postural analysis.

A large aspect of our posture is genetic and inherited. This is called our genotype – it refers to the anomalies in shape and structure of our bones and joints and in the specific make-up of our muscles. (For example, we may have a strength or an endurance advantage). These are the cards we are dealt and we have to know and understand them in order to optimize our bodies.

Our lifestyle determines the outcome of our genetic inheritance. What we do with our bodies can either enhance a predisposition to injury or pain, or lead us away from this outcome. The way our body develops through posture, movement and activity is also a strong indicator of injury and pain, and eventually chronic pain. This is called our phenotype.

The physiotherapists in this practice believe that our posture, both inherited and acquired, have an impact on the outcome of your rehabilitation. We use the analysis of static and dynamic posture to test our hypothesis on which muscles and activities require intervention and change.

Posture forms an integral part of our assessment and analysis of your movement and we believe that with a joint insight into this very adaptive aspect of our bodies, we can make a profound difference to your rehabilitation outcome. You will come away with an understanding of your postural tendencies and a simple approach to maintaining your best posture.
