Neurological Rehabilitation

In the past there was little specialisation in physiotherapy, and a generic approach was used for all disabling conditions, regardless of their clinical origin.

Patients who had suffered a stroke for example, were encouraged to regain function as quickly as possible by any means. They therefore were encouraged to compensate for paralysis of the affected side by using the unaffected side. We know now that the brain has the ability to modify its own organization and function in response to learning and experience by means of neural plasticity. This means the brain can recover if influenced by specific input and repetitive movement and posture. Neurological rehabilitation has now developed into a specialised field of physiotherapy. It is beneficial in conditions with neurological origin, to have input from a physiotherapist with this experience.

Our knowledge of neurological rehabilitation enables us to help you achieve your maximal potential. We draw on this knowledge and our experience from various treatment methods and theories including the Bobath concept, proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation and motor relearning programme. The rehabilitation will include a comprehensive assessment of your current condition and function which will guide the setting of realistic individualised goals with your therapist. Specific management and planning strategies with regard to pain, fatigue and care giver education may be included, as well as maintenance measures such as a home based exercise programme.

Treatment sessions focus on the achievement of your particular goals. We work to improve your movement patterns, limit unwanted excessive movement, strengthen misused or disused muscles and to improve balance and endurance. We also incorporate the management of pain, muscle tone and muscle and nerve ‘stiffness’. Neurological physiotherapy will include the assessment for specialized assistive devices such as splints, wheelchairs and walking devices.

We strive to be creative in the treatment of these multi-faceted conditions. We believe the rehabilitation process should be empowering and successful, but also enjoyable and life affirming.
